Guide: Overview - your FirstMagic installation

The Root

The website root, seen in FirstClassLeft: the website root container. Do not rename or delete any of these objects.

Objects in FirstMagic Root

Homepage: depending on choices made in FirstMagic Preferences, this is the entire Homepage, its header, or a Splash Screen:

Newslist• Set [X] Articles to 0 to make it the entire Homepage

• Set [x] Articles to show more than 0 and it becomes  the Newslist Header.

• Check the Homepage option and the Homepage becomes a Splash Screen without menus or sidebars.

Content: Contains all web pages and Newslist Articles, as well as the Menu and Sidebar Containers.

Digital Signage: The default Digital Sign Calendar creates a digital sign from Calendar Events, Tasks and FirstClass Documents.

FirstMagic: The FirstMagic Preferences Form - configure all aspects of the website and it´s publishing capabilites here.

Ensemble: editable system files [not needed for daily operation]. Ensemble contains CustomCSS (stylesheets), the FavIcon file, custom language resources, and a number of HTML include documents for installing external services. It also contains the SiteWidgets and SignWidgets containers - configurable footers where you can add features and extra content to the site.

The root container also contains two invisible objects you should never need to modify:

        • robots.txt - a document that stops search engines from indexing system files
        • index.shtml - the actual index document to the site

The Content Container

The Content ContainerThis is the website content area. The built-in containers are automatically published, unless you turn them off in FirstMagic Preferences.

Documents archived directly in Content will become part of the Homepage Newslist and the site´s RSS feed.

If Blog Mode is enabled, they will be shown in full on the Homepage. If not, the first 250 characters from each document will be rendered together with a thumbnail of any image in the first paragraph.

Sub-containers in Content will not show up in the Newslist but must be linked to manually.

Sidebar: add containers, widgets and documents to generate the Sidebar Menu. Documents will become text boxes, containers will become menus with links to what´s inside.

Menu: add containers and documents to generate the Top Menu. Containers will become dropdowns with links to what´s inside.

Comments: comments posted via the built-in commenting system is stored here, and can be moderated by opening and editing them directly.

The root and the Content Container: how it ties together

Document flow in FirstMagic

Homepage: the document pinned to the top of the Content Newslist.

Content: holds all web pages, menus and News Items inside:

        - Documents: becomes Newslist Items listed on the Homepage
           [like the QuickStart example].

        - Sidebar: documents inside becomes sidebar objects, while containers becomes
lists of links to the documents and folders inside.

        - Menu: the website Top Menu. Documents inside becomes links, and containers becomes
drop-down lists with links to the documents and folders inside.

All this can be tweaked and turned on/off in FirstMagic Preferences.

Some important notes about publishing:
Page rendering will break if you move (or change the name of) any of these objects:

        • Menu          • Sidebar          • Comments

However, you can change the name of the Content container itself to anything you like. Just make sure any changes is reflected on Tab 1 in FirstMagic Preferences.

FirstMagic uses icon IDs to determine how an object is to be rendered, so it can have undesirable side effects to change an object´s default icon. For example, changing the icon of a comment file in Comments will cause it to become searchable (which you will probably not want, as it will show up in hitlists with no reference to it´s parent page).
