Publish new pages by navigating to the container you want the page to appear in, and create either a FirstClass Document or a new Message there. Either will work, but note that Messages have expiry dates.
1: CREATING CONTENT
Publish Web Pages
- Writing: You can use all formatting options in the FCWS editor, but font family and text size will usually be overridden by your website´s current design theme - its FirstMagic Skin.
- Images: When inserting images into your content, always use the Image URL button, never use the inline image button: inline images will not work on the web. But image URLs works the same way - you can still format and position the picture, and still see a preview of it in the text body. The difference is that you must upload the image somewhere before putting it to use - for example to your Library container. The image URL will be www.yourwebsite.[com]/library/imagename.jpg. You can upload images to your Library by logging into your website and clicking the Upload Button in the Utility shelf there.
- Slideshows: To create slideshows in a page, simply upload your images as file attachments to the Document itself. Make sure to prefix each image with slide_ (slide_mypicture.jpg).
- Page Titles: The Subject Field of your Document always becomes the web page title. If you leave it blank, the filename will be the title - which, if you use a Message, would be your own name. It is good practice to always fill in the Subject field.
- Keywords: For Web Pages, the Keywords field can be used to publish keywords for Search Engines. What you put there will be picked up and indexed by Google, for example (separate your keywords with commas). For Sidebar and Footer Objects, the Keywords field are not treated this way - such objects aren´t considered separate pages. For these, a keyword will simply associate your Sidebar or Footer document with a particular page elsewhere on the system - it makes it context sensitive.
- Widgets and Custom Forms: FCWS cannot install forms, but you will be able to use them once they exist. Use the FC Client for installation, or ask your FirstClass Administrator.
A note on visibility
FirstClass containers are split in two: the upper and the lower pane. In FCWS this is not apparent - the distinction is not visible. You have to look at the properties form of any given object to determine which pane it is in.
FirstMagic uses panes to show and hide objects from navigation features on the web: upper pane objects are hidden from view, lower are visible. This is not the same thing as published and unpublished; a hidden object is still published, and can be accessed if the visitor knows its URL.
- To hide an object in FCWS, set its Properties View to upper. To show it, set it to lower.
- To unpublish it, make it unapproved. To publish it, approve it.
TEMPLATES AND LAYOUTS
In the traditional FirstClass Client you can create FirstMagic Layouts - specialized containers that will render Blogs, PodCast Channels, Multimedia collections and so on, as well as various Document types - FirstMagic Templates. The picker that does this for you do not exist in FCWS, but there is another way to do it: tag the Category field.
To make a Blog, for example, create a Container where you want the Blog to appear, and give it a Name and Subject in it´s Properties window. Then write the word "blog" into the Category field. This will cause it to appear and behave like a Blog on the web. You can create any custom FirstMagic Layout this way.

Container types |
Listing |
Creates a Listing Container. This makes a browsable directory if viewed as a Web Page. In the Menu, it will create a drop-down. In the Sidebar, it creates a sub-menu. |
Blog |
Creates a full-sized Blog |
News |
A newslist: a condensed Blog, showing only the first paragraph of each document with a "Read More"-link attached. |
Gallery |
Will only display uploaded images in a grid. Images are clickable, and will output both large versions of themselves as well as all their associated EXIF data. |
Tiles |
Will display everything as tiles - similar to the Windows 8 Start Screen. |
Podcasts |
Creates a PodCast Channel that can be listened to in your website, from an RSS feed, or through an iTunes subscription. |
Tabs |
Sorts your content into tabs. |
Project |
The FirstMagic PRO special container - in PRO, will produce stand-alone websites. In regular FM [and PRO as well], also are special project containers that can be personalized. Sorts your content into tabs.
Note: project containers belongs in the Portal; they will not work anywhere else [use aliases for that]. |
FirstClass |
Makes the container look like an old-fashioned FirstClass Conference, displaying both the upper and lower pane, disregarding the Header Document. |
|
Document types |
Masthead |
[For Containers]: to make a Header for a Layout, give a document the Masthead tag and set it´s Properties View to Upper. |
Singular |
Will make a web page document that doesn´t have Header/Menu, Sidebar or Footer: it will be completely separate from the rest of the website. |
Popup |
Will make a web page document that becomes a modal pop-up [it will pop up inside the current page instead of opening as it´s own page]. |
Lightbox |
Will make images [on a regular web page document] behave in lightbox mode instead of opening as separate items when clicked. This mode makes it possible to use images as regular links. |
Sitelist |
Makes a special web page that generates a directory of all Projects [all sub-sites in PRO]. |
Freetext |
Will make a web page document where fonts aren´t locked to the active Skin; you can use fonts, colors, sizes and styles freely. |
